The Watkin Jones Group worked with Edinburgh based architects Oberlanders and the Edinburgh office of Jones Lang LaSalle to secure planning permission for 300 bed spaces of student accommodation accessed from the Royal Mile in Edinburgh and within the Edinburgh World Heritage Site. The scheme was subject to a large amount of pre-application discussion with a number of organisations including Historic Scotland, the Cockburn Association, local councillors, residents and businesses.
Permission was granted in late 2010 and the scheme was completed in the summer of 2012. The scheme has secured a number of awards including: a commendation within the 2014 Civic Trust Awards; a 2013 Scottish Award for Quality in Planning issued by the Scottish Government; and a commendation in the 2013 Scottish Design Awards.
This development was subsequently sold to Cordea Savills.
