Building careers - by helping people!

Watkin Jones are famous for constructing buildings across a wide range of sectors – and now we’re being acclaimed for building careers too!
The company picked up the Leadership & People Development Award for 2007 at the Constructing Excellence in Wales Awards. Sponsored by, amongst others, the Welsh Assembly Government, these awards are highly respected and sought after.
Watkin Jones were awarded the prize for having created a dynamic and successful programme of ‘people development’ for their staff. Mark Watkin Jones, Group Managing Director said “Our commitment to helping people develop their careers, and indeed the whole of their lives, comes right from the top and influences everyone in the company. The management team are constantly looking for ways to improve all aspects of working life at Watkin Jones. Personal care and commitment to personal development are the keystones to this policy - and in the last year we have focussed on improving the atmosphere, attitudes and culture of the company”.
Employees now benefit from a programme which helps them deal with various demanding and stressful situations – and our senior management team have undertaken a course of executive coaching to give them the skills necessary for successful leadership.
The results are here to be seen. Not only in collecting this award – where our citation praised ‘an example of personal and people development unusual for this size of company’ – but in the performance indicators which measure our success. This year, for instance, there has been a marked reduction in absenteeism figures, with not a single employee on long term sickness leave. A sure sign that Watkin Jones is becoming a happier, healthier company.
